A Conversation With Dr. Mawiyah Kambon

The Black Reality Think Tank is honored to host a conversation with the esteemed elder Dr. Mawiyah Kambon . In the year 2000, Dr. Mawiyah Kambon served as the president of the National Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi). That year she convened the annual professional convention which brought 500 Black psychologists and their families to Ghana, West Africa. The gathering in Ghana was symbolic of spiritual reclamation through traditional healing. As a result, Black and African-centered psychologists were empowered with resources to improve more lives worldwide. Dr. Mawiyah Kambon is a lifetime member of the National Association of Black Psychologists.

Dr. Mawiyah Kambon is a trained traditional healer of the Akan culture and has the title as Nana Efia Nsia Asantewaa. She and her son Dr. Obadele Kwame Kambon take hundreds of individuals annually on a self-discovery African reconnection journey to Ghana on the annual Sankofa Journey. She developed the Sankofa Journey because she recognizes how critical it is to embrace African identify as a foundation for the cultural, spiritual, and psychological healing of Black people.Dr. Mawiyah Kambon believes it’s time for our people to rise to our traditional greatness and that in order to rise we must heal individually and collectively from the ruptures and inter-generational trauma we have experienced. She also believes that “African-centered therapists have the power and responsibility to heal our community, restore our ability to self-determine, and change our collective destiny.”
